What Is TMPS?

Ford Salisbury

Here at Pittsville Ford, your local Ford dealership, we want our customers to know how important it is to use a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TMPS). A system which is there to warn you when one or more of your tires is low on air, the TMPS provides you with the information you need to avoid any potential accidents or emergencies. The TMPS low tire pressure indicator is a yellow symbol that — when activated — will illuminate along the dashboard of your Ford car, truck or SUV. It is in the shape of a tire cross-section, resembling a horseshoe, with an exclamation point. Our staff at Pittsville Ford, your Ford Salisbury destination, will be sure to point out exactly where you can find the Tire Pressure Monitoring System icon on your dashboard, so you always know where to look when you have to.

There are two types of Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems: indirect TMPS and direct TMPS. The indirect TMPS usually relies on wheel speed sensors — used by your anti-lock brake system — that measure the revolutions from each of your wheels. This can be used by the on-board computer systems in your Ford for comparison, speed, the relative size of your tires and more. If it is detected that a wheel is spinning faster than normal, the computer will calculate that your tire is underinflated and activate the indirect TMPS to alert you.

Using the same format as the indirect TMPS, the direct TMPS additionally utilizes pressure monitoring sensors placed within each tire for a more accurate reading. It then wirelessly relays a variety of different information, like the current temperature of your tires, to a centralized control module to be analyzed. Your dashboard icon will immediately light up if low air levels are detected in any of your tires. While more comprehensive, the direct TMPS can be a pricier option than the indirect TMPS. Here at Pittsville Ford, your Ford Salisbury home, we will be glad to go over the differences between these two with you and help you find the right system for your individual budget.

Along with regular tire maintenance from our factory-trained service technicians at Pittsville Ford, your local Ford dealership, the TMPS gives you complete peace of mind because you will know exactly when you need to fill your tires or if there are any other issues you need to be aware of. When you bring your Ford in Salisbury in for your service appointment, feel free to ask our staff any questions that you have about your Ford’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System. We always want to give you the information you need, especially if it will be of help when you are out on the road. Contact us today!
